A sub-neighborhood of Jamaica, Briarwood is a very affordable place. There are a lot of midcentury co-ops, so it’s a great choice for first-time home-buyers on a budget. One of these, Parkway Village, was built in 1948 for United Nations employees and diplomats (when the headquarters were in Flushing Meadows) who were discriminated against when seeking housing. The development, now co-ops, features two- to three-story neo-Georgian apartment buildings set on landscaped grounds. The commercial area is pretty sparse, though Briarwood is close to Main Street and the central commercial district of Jamaica; this situation will likely change in the years to come.
